Is anyone else as excited as I am to be heading not once, but twice to the cinema this year for two amazing Stephen King movies?
Most of you will already know that Stephen King's IT is being remade this year & with the advancement of cinematography and HD viewing, the remake promises to be a spectacular visual effect of all the horrors that Stephen Kings mind can come up with. I didn't think I could get more excited about another movie this year than I am for IT, until I found out yesterday that for the first time, one of Stephen Kings longest running novels, The Dark Tower, is also being made into a movie and comes out on August 4th. Did I also mention it also stars two gorgeous men in the forms of Idris Alba and Matthew McConaughey?

But maybe I should start at the beginning :)
Why I love Stephen King!!
I was the tender old age of 7 years old when I had my first foray into the macabre mind of Stephen King. I was at home with my dad and sister and had been sent to bed because they were going to watch a scary movie on TV (cue crazy clown who plays in drains and eats you). What my dad and sister didn't see was me sneaking back into the lounge and watching IT from behind the couch (or maybe they did see me but just chose to teach me a lesson). And boy did it ever teach me a lesson. To this day, I hate clowns and I can't walk over drains and don't even start to talk to me about seeing a random balloon floating through the air!! But it also taught me something about fear and over-coming it.
Stephen King has written 54 novels in addition to the 7 he wrote under the pen name of Richard Bachmann. He has also written over 200 short stories. More than half of Stephen Kings' books have been adapted into movies, with his more notable ones being Carrie, Christine, Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Misery, Pet Cemetery, Children of the Corner, IT, Thinner and Cujo (but to name a few). I own over 40 of his books and several of his movies on DVD & Blu Ray.
What I love about Stephen King is that he scares you at your core with things that you just don't talk about in polite circles. Take IT for example. The whole premise of IT is that "IT" manifests itself in whatever your deepest and darkest fear is and exploits your worst phobia's. That in and of itself is terrifying. And for many of us, our deepest fears are so deep down in our psyche that we don't even know what they are. How many of you can truly say what your deepest, darkest fear in life is without lying to yourself or those around you? Now imagine something that can get into your mind, find that fear and make it come to life! Pretty awful stuff that makes for a great read and even better movie!
If I had to choose my favorite work of his, it would be The Green Mile. While it strays away from his "typical" horror, it does feature the paranormal (a man who can inexplicably heal you). I love that this story delves into the side of pure evil and pits it again the nature of pure good. The fact that we live in a world we both of those concepts are based in realism, is I think what scares me the most. We hear every day about monstrosities that humans do and then we have hero's whose selfless acts make us believe that there is good in the world and mankind isn't a doomed breed meant to self destruct.
So yes my friends, if you are looking for me this summer, chances are I'll be curled up re-reading both the Dark Towers and IT before their cinematic releases later this year! I hope you enjoy both trailers and I'll leave you with one of my favorite Stephen King Quotes:
“Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They live inside us, and sometimes, they win.”
